Blackawton Area Guide

Blackawton is a pretty village situated in the South Hams between Totnes and Dartmouth. A working parish with a vibrant community spirit, Blackawton offers so much to discover, from gentle walks giving stunning views over sea and moor. The village is only 3 ½  miles from the gorgeous Blackpool Sands beach so it is easy to decide to spend a lovely day on the beach with the great Venus Café providing great food and maybe a wine or beer.

The Church of St Michael in the village dates back to the 15th century and boasts a Norman baptismal font as well as a fabulous, well-preserved rood screen. The parishes of Blackawton and Strete have been linked closely for a very long time and Strete only became a separate civil parish in 1935.

There is a Community Shop and Post Office which is located on the village’s main street, opposite the church and just next to the very stylish George Inn which provides a lovely focal point. The village in addition to having the well respected Blackawton Primary School has much going on with for example an active WI group, an Amateur Dramatics Society, Bell Ringers and not to mention being the host of the annual Worm Charming Festival (yes really!!) which has been run since 1980 is enormous fun for all the family, and not taken too seriously!

If you like your golf Dartmouth Hotel Golf and Spa has 2 courses whilst Woodlands theme park is a great one for the kids and as you live so close the season ticket is a no brainer as they are both just a mile down the road.

The housing stock is quite varied on Blackawton with sweet period cottages in the centre and larger family houses with land on the outskirts. There has been some development over the years so there is a choice of more modern houses in the area as well.
