Chinkwell Tor is a really lovely granite and stone built Holiday Use Only barn conversion in an utterly stunning location in Dartmoor National Park between the famous land marks of Haytor and Widecombe in the Moor. One of only six cottages that have been superbly restored from a collection of period granite barns built originally as a Model Farm in the 1900’s.
Located in the upper yard level and named after a local Tor, Chinkwell Tor is enclosed by a granite wall and has a sheltered lawned garden right outside the front door. This south east facing property is full of character throughout with an abundance of exposed stone walls, granite mullion windows, a wealth of exposed beams, and also practical slate and oak flooring.
It is beautifully presented throughout and tastefully restored with holidays in mind while still retaining many of the original features. On entering there is a large inner hall – ideal for lots of muddy boots, coats and soggy dogs, that opens up into a corridor leading to two ground floor bedrooms, the family bathroom and a large open plan kitchen/living/dining room.
The lovely farmhouse kitchen has a range of oak units with integrated appliances, a range, and ample room for a large kitchen table. The living area with its magnificent exposed beams has a wood burner at its heart to snuggle up to after those rambling moorland walks and for those cosy winter evenings.
From here the stairs lead you upstairs to the master bedroom with another large family bathroom. This large characterful room has a beamed vaulted ceiling and views over the Dartmoor countryside.
There is a small enclosed garden with picnic table and chairs and parking for 2 cars and a large under croft storage area accessed via the courtyard. Its elevated position gives it great views over the roof of Hay Tor cottage below to Ripon Tor in the distance.
It is located high amongst the most distinctive Tors on Dartmoor. Widecombe in the Moor is approx. 2 miles away, a sociable Dartmoor village offering a lively community spirit and monthly farmers markets. There are also two quintessentially English pubs with open log fires and cosy bars. Delis, grocers and bakeries can be found in nearby Ashburton and also provides access to the A38 Devon express way to the cities of Plymouth and Exeter where there is an international airport, national rail network and the M5 Motorway.
The cottage itself is surrounded by wild and diverse open stretches of the heather clad Dartmoor countryside with rolling hills, waterfalls and provides some of the best walking and riding in the country.
